DUT strike continues

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The wage strike at the Durban University of Technology has now entered its sixth week as negotiations between management and labour unions remain unsettled.

Last week, management decided to suspend all lectures due to the on-going strike. The workers are aligned to the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (Nehawu), the Tertiary Education National Union and the National Tertiary Education Union.

They are demanding an 8% increase and a R350 housing allowance. The university is offering an increase of 6.5%.

DUT spokesperson Alan Khan says the university cannot go beyond this offer.

“There is no agreement and the deadlock between the university and three labour unions is still firmly in place. This after a considerable amount of time and energy has been placed on negotiations for 2018 salary increases.”

Khan adds: “The executive committee of the senate of the university took the decision to further suspend the start of lectures at DUT. Lectures were supposed to start last Tuesday. We were confident that we were going to have a vast number of lectures in class, but sadly, by the end of the week the numbers had dwindled.”
