The cause of the fire is believed to be a candle. Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

“We just want to urge our residents especially in our most vulnerable communities, the informal settlement, to continue to look after lighting appliances like candles and paraffin stoves not to leave them unattended to avoid devastating fire incidents. There were other 11 shacks which were affected during the fire incident of which we have activated our disaster management officials who are assisting with the relief to those affected victims.”
