Fifty-four suspects are appearing in the Mooi River Magistrate’s court in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands on Wednesday.

They were arrested during a violent protest on Sunday evening and Monday when 18 trucks were torched.

A total of 32 trucks were affected, some were burnt completely while others were looted.

The suspects are facing charges of public violence and arson. The protest led to a total shut down of the N3 near Mooi River toll plaza.

The protest apparently started after South African truck drivers fought with foreign national truck drivers accusing them of stealing their jobs.
