Reading Time: < 1 minute

Zimbabwe’s State media says 42 people were injured, six of them in a serious condition, in an explosion at a  political rally address by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Bulawayo on Saturday.

Mnangagwa visited some of the injured people in hospital on Saturday.

He vowed that what he described as a cowardly act would not derail Zimbabwe’s first elections since the ousting of former President Robert Mugabe.

Mnangagwa described the attack as the work of defeatist elements. There’s been no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, and Zimbabwe authorities have not given details of any suspected perpetrator.

He escaped injury at the White City stadium explosion, in what has been described as an assassination attempt on his life.
