Metrorail in the Western Cape says 33 coaches have been damaged in acts of vandalism and suspected arson this year alone.
This is compared to 32 last year.
This year’s tally includes the three train coaches that were destroyed on Saturday night train’s fire at the Cape Town Station.
Arson is suspected in all the three recent train fires.
Metrorail spokesperson in the Western Cape, Riana Scott says,“We confirm that another train caught fire on platform13, it affects both platforms 13 + 14, info at hand is that three carriages have been destroyed and our teams are still there as well, the set that is damaged is part of the cape flats fleet.”
