23 people involved in Mahikeng violence expected in court

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The 23 suspects arrested for malicious damage to property and public violence, during protests in Mahikeng, are expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court Monday.

The protests have left a trail of destruction after shops were looted and property damaged.

The Mahikeng Municipality has started to clean up after the violence.

Municipal Mayor Betty Diakanyo has rejected a message on social media warning people in Mahikeng not to go to work and school on Monday.

“With regard to the message that is around here, as Mahikeng local municipality we know nothing about that message. We will never ever issue that irresponsible message as Mahikeng local municipality.  The President has spoken to the people of Mahikeng – they have listened to him, they are waiting for the leadership to come back to them after the period when the president will be here again. So, there is nothing that is going to happen to our communities tomorrow or even the days that are coming.”
