The 2017 pass matric pass rate for the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) is 98.76%. This is an increase from 2016’s pass rate of 98.67%.

All students who passed achieved a pass that is good enough to enter tertiary study at one of the three levels with about 90% qualifying for entry to degree study and 9% qualifying for entry to diploma study.

The IEB matric exams were taken by 11 464 full-time and 666 part-time students at 212 examination centres across Southern Africa in October and November 2017. The process was monitored by Umalusi, which has declared the results to be fair and valid.

“The 2017 NSC candidates have done very well and have once again shown that with a commitment to hard work over their 12 years of schooling, and supported by a dedicated cohort of teachers and parents, they have passed with flying colours. They are ready for the next step in their journey of life-long learning,” says Anne Oberholzer, CEO of the IEB.

The IEB says the closing date for the applications for re-marking is 10 January. Those results will be released on 5 February. The closing date to enroll for the supplementary examination  is 12 February. The department of Education will release the National Senior Certificate results on Friday.
