More than 1000 people blocked from invading land in Midrand

Police have blocked more than 1 000 people from invading an open field next to the Waterfall Cemetery in Midrand,  north of Johannesburg. This comes after a number of attempted land grabs in the area earlier this month.

Residents of Alexandra township arrived in bakkies and cars filled with building material, ready to occupy the open land before being driven back by members of the police.

They say the informal settlement that they currently call home is full and no longer inhabitable. One man says he has been waiting for his RDP house since 2000 and is now taking his fate into his own hands.

The situation is currently calm and police presence is visible. According to police no shacks have been erected and no arrests have been made. However the Economic Freedom Fighters contradicts this saying at least six people have been arrested. Click below for more on the story:
