Public Enterprises Minister Barbara Hogan is yet to comment on Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga's resignation. According to an internal memorandum read to staff by Eskom chairperson Bobby Godsell yesterday, Maroga has agreed to step down.
Maroga has recently been under fire for ignoring a report which had warned about major power outages two years ago. The Democratic Alliance, Independent Democrats, Freedom Front Plus and Solidarity have welcomed his reported resignation.
Meanwhile, Government is looking at ways to mitigate Eskom's proposed 45% a year electricity price increase for the next three years. It says Hogan will continue to meet relevant ministers, including Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, to consider options that may mitigate the extent of the proposed electricity tariff hikes.
Pan African Capital CEO Iraj Abedian has welcomed the decision saying the proposed funding model is not sustainable.
