Fate of over 50 minors at Methodist church to be decided tomorrow February 08 2010 , 6:08:00
Central Methodist Church

The fate of over 50 minors living at Central Methodist Church in downtown Johannesburg will only be decided tomorrow. The Johannesburg High Court appointed child law expert Dr Ann Skelton and is expected to list recommendations for the welfare of the children.

Skelton was granted curatorship by the court to oversee the well- being of the minors residing at the church. Skelton is investigating various issues relating to the conditions the children are living in.

There are about 55 unaccompanied minors staying at the church. The child law expert is supposed to determine what is in their best interest.

For the past few months, the Gauteng Health and Social Development Department has been trying to relocate the children to places of safety. But the court ordered that no one must remove any of the children from the church pending the recommendations from Skelton.

Skelton criticised Gauteng's Health and Social Development’s slow pace in responding to their plight. While the bulk of the children have been moved to the Soweto Community Centre others are expected to be relocated soon. Skelton's report also urges that the Gauteng's Director of Public Prosecutions intervene in the sexual offences cases that were reported last year.
