Egypt lifts ban on SA beef March 19 2010 , 6:00:00

Egypt has finally lifted its ban on South African beef. This was announced at the conclusion of the joint bilateral commission between the two countries in Pretoria. It is a move seen as boosting confidence and strengthening diplomatic relations between the two governments.

It is almost 10 years since Egypt banned importing South Africa's beef. This was due to the foot and mouth disease that erupted in the country in early 2000. Egypt's ban remained even though South Africa was subsequently declared free of the disease by the World Organization for Animal Health Standards.

Following a three day joint bilateral commission between the two countries, the ban has now been lifted. The two governments have also agreed to work together on issues of peace and security in the continent. With South Africa lobbying for a return to the UN Security Council, Egypt remains a dependable ally as chair of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM).

The commission has also been preparing for President Jacob Zuma's state visit to Egypt in October.
