Kidnapped Atteridgeville lecturers released March 09 2010 , 9:15:00

About 150 lecturers at the Tshwane South College in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, have been released after being locked inside the building by angry students. One of the lecturers, Dingaan Makwela, says the students are demanding textbooks and other learning materials.

Makwela says the school currently has about 10% of the total textbooks required and that they are not able to secure the required number of textbooks as they are still awaiting procurement of purchase.

Latest reports indicate that calm has returned to the college after student leaders negotiated with police as students burnt tyres inside the college yard. Makwela says the angry students used fire extinguishers to stop lecturers from going out of the building.

Makwela says the students also locked the gates in an effort to prevent police from entering the premises. He confirmed that about 1 000 students were involved in the riot act.
