The newly appointed administrator of Athletics South Africa (ASA) Ray Mali says he is not ready to divulge his plan of action for the embattled body. This after South Africa's Olympic governing body, SASCOC, suspended ASA President Leonard Chuene and the entire board of ASA over their handling of the Caster Semenya debacle.
The suspended ASA board had a meeting late this afternoon to map out the way forward. They believe the suspension of Chuene, the Board and some employees is unlawful. It doesn't seem likely that the suspension will be overturned. But plans are already in motion for an interim board to be appointed, a move that has been welcomed by others.
"We are going to need a new board, fresh people in those positions, people who've got knowledge, passion, management skills and the knowledge about athletics to take athletics to the next step," says former athlete Francois Fouche.
Allegations of incompetence have been levelled at the entire management team even before the Berlin World Championships debacle - leading to the withdrawal of some sponsors from athletics.
A good balance is needed to take the sport forward. "If we can get the right balance between coaches, athlete preparation, and management in the right place - together with the financial support from sponsors, we can go somewhere," Fouche added.
Normality needs to return to athletics soon - so that the athletes can focus on next year's Commonwealth Games in India.
