Johannesburg motorists will have to be content with potholes on some of the major roads for a longer period. The Johannesburg Roads Agency says it has only prioritised to finish roads that have been designated to be used during the 2010, due to budget constraints.
Agency spokesperson Advocate Thulani Makhubela says there is only R80 million available towards road resurfacing for the current financial year. Makhubela says: "We only have a budget of about R80 million for resurfacing in this financial year, so we obviously do not have as much as we would like to have, and we will have to prioritize on which roads we are going to be resurfacing for this financial year”.
“We basically will be attending to all the main material and the roads that have been designated for purpose of 2010 but this is not to the total disregard of any other treatment that the other roads would require we'll still be attending to those;" Makhubela added.
Last month, government said that road construction taking place on Gauteng’s major roads will come to a halt during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. While taking a tour of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP), Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele’s said he was happy with the progress of the GFIP, adding that those who used to say that the government would fail to improve its road infrastructure will soon develop a change of heart.
