National Police Commissioner Bheki Cele has again met with Interpol's Secretary-General Ronald Noble at the organisation's headquarters in France yesterday. This is part of several meetings aimed at improving security checks and passport control in South Africa ahead of and during the Soccer World Cup next year.
Police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says Interpol will also be based in the country during this period. “Interpol will assist in providing officers to man our ports, to assist us in passport control - in identifying internationally wanted suspects and also to look for people that may have stolen or falsified documents that are trying to come into the country. This basically enhances our existing capacity. We do have the capacity but, considering the volumes of people that will be coming into the country pre 2010 and during the tournament itself, this will definitely assist us.”
During the talks, Noble praised South Africa's ability to host international events. "South Africa can be proud of its past achievements, particularly in its ability to deliver major events without incidents, including its support in the latest ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean," he said, referring to the death of Pakistani cricket coach Bob Woolmer.
Woolmer was found dead in his hotel room during the event. The South African Police Service assisted in the investigation into his death.
Noble further pledged that the full resources of Interpol will be made available to South Africa to support security arrangements for the World Cup. He will visit South Africa ahead of the final draw of the World Cup in December this year.
