Zille unveils R28bln development plan November 07 2009 , 6:45:00

Western Cape Premier, Helen Zille has unveiled plans for a R28 billion mega development based in George in the Southern Cape. The development is expected to transform George and the Garden Route into a prime global tourist and business destination.

The project is the brain child of a private company and is based on East Asian models. The plan was first mooted about ten years ago. Government gave it the green light in February this year.

“This is an audacious project - it is of the magnitude that a few projects really are. It is a vision for the future - it is a right step in development and creativity and that is what we precisely want in the Western and Southern Cape,” says Zille.

The project also known as Destiny Africa is a signature development in Africa and encompasses 2.5 million square metres of bulk floor space. It includes a conferencing and exhibition hub, commercial and retail, a knowledge city, business park, university cluster, medical and biosphere tourism components, eco-residential and housing developments.

Developers says it has already attracted a lot of interest from international investors especially in countries such as China and Singapore.
