Calm returns to Mdantsane Township after violent protests November 20 2009 , 11:03:00
Protest

Calm has been restored in Mdantsane Township in East London - after hundreds of disgruntled residents from the township went on the rampage this morning, barricading roads with stones and burning tyres. Police had to be called to diffuse the situation.

Access to roads and from the center of Mdantsane were disrupted with barricades - preventing people from making their way to work this morning. Rocks, rubbish and burning tyres were used by residents to display their dissatisfaction with lack of service delivery by the Buffalo City Municipality. They cite the slow pace of housing delivery as one of their major complaints and they say the provincial government has not kept its promises.

The residents have resolved to meet with the municipality next week when it is hoped that their concerns will be speedily addressed.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo City Council in the Eastern Cape has acknowledged that it has a huge housing backlog.
