BRT bus shot at in Soweto March 13 2010 , 12:00:00
BRT buses

A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus was shot at in Soweto in a drive-by shooting, Johannesburg police said today. "Four occupants in a sedan shot at a BRT bus last night but no one was injured," said Captain Katlego Mogale today.

The shooting happened in Klipriver Valley Road in Soweto, while the operator was picking up other bus drivers. She was unable to say if the shooting was linked to threats made by the taxi industry.

Angry members of the taxi industry last month threatened to use violent protests against the BRT system as they felt their livelihood was being threatened by its implementation.

Yesterday, the United Taxi Association Forum (Utaf) said the City of Joburg was forcing the BRT system on the taxi industry. Utaf spokesperson Ralph Jones says the union was staging an indefinite stay-away in opposition to the expansion of the BRT system as the city planned to add smaller buses to feed into the main BRT routes on Monday. He said the city was clamping down on illegal taxis as a means to further the BRT system.

No arrests had been made yet but police were investigating. – Sapa
