Patti Labelle in SA to belt out her legendary tunes October 30 2009 , 6:27:00

Music lovers are in for a treat this weekend as the US rhythm and blues and soul legend Patti Labelle has arrived in the country. The Grammy award winner jetted in on Wednesday for a two day concert at Cape Town's Grand West yesterday and at Sun City tomorrow evening.

The 65-year-old old Labelle is expected to perform some of her songs which have catapulted her into stardom over the years.

Despite being diagnosed with diabetes about 14-years ago, Labelle says she is still going strong and she says her fans can expect nothing but the best.

β€œIt is a very unpredictable line up, it is my first time ever in my life – I have never played in Africa before. I have been here with Oprah Winfrey for the opening of the girls school in Johannesburg but this is my dream come true. Just expect fun, expect tears and expect lost of laughter,” says Labelle.

Labelle is renowned for her passionate stage performances, wide vocal range and distinctive high-octave belting. Her biography, Don't Block the Blessings, remained at the top of the The New York Times best-seller list for several weeks.

Labelle fronted two groups, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, which received minor success on the pop charts in the 1960s, and Labelle which received acclaim and a mainstream breakthrough in 1974 with their song Lady Marmalade. She went on to have a solo recording career, earning another US number one single in 1986 with On my Own, a duet with Michael McDonald.
