ANCYL Capricorn members to elect new leadership November 07 2009 , 2:45:00

More than 150 African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) members in the Capricorn region of Limpopo will today elect their new leadership. Positions include that of a regional chairperson and secretary. However, a few disgruntled League members have held protests outside the conference venue.

While the conference was underway, a group of disgruntled members from sub-regions, Blouberg, Molemole and Polokwane held protests outside the venue. The group says they are not against the election of new leadership structures, but against what they say is macro managing of the League.

Chairperson of Ward 20 in Polokwane, Thobo Ramashaba says the leadership of the wing in the region depends on few individuals for decision-making. The fourth annual conference is being attended by about 180 delegates at a local lodge in Polokwane.  The two day conference will focus on issues that include youth and governance, economic transformation, education and health.

Last week President Jacob Zuma urged the youth to emulate former ANCYL leaders such as Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela. There has been some concern in recent months about the behaviour of League members. Zuma was speaking at the Youth League's 65th birthday celebrations in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. He also urged members to tackle challenges head on.
