SA Communications Ministry grilled by Parliament March 09 2010 , 4:50:00

South Africa’s Communications Department came under pressure from the Parliamentary portfolio committee to reveal its financial plans, including those for the SABC. Director-general Mamodupi Mohlala blamed the lack of clarity on  unfinished ministerial performance contracts.

The department has a R2 billion budget and the committee wanted to know if everything was under control.. Communication director general, Mamodupi Mohlala said  "We will not only make sure we properly monitor, but we're saying we'll now properly analyse the corporate plans that are presented by the state-owned entities."

But members of the Parliamentary committee  were not convinced. Independent Democrats leader, Patricia de Lille said: "Self sustainability funding models for Sentech, SABC, PBS, Nemisa. -  When will these new funding models be agreed on?"

Another Committee Member, Julie Killian wanted to know: "Can you really say that we need six deputy director-generals in a small department like this?"

Pressed for more details, Mohlala explained the predicament: "our strategic plan is linked to the performance agreement that will be concluded with the minister, so that is not in place yet, which is a key critical ingredient":

It's not yet clear when ministers will sign their performance agreements with the President.
