The City of Johannesburg has denied the United Taxi Association Forum's allegations that it has embarked on a campaign against taxi operators.
Member of the Mayoral Committee, Rehana Moosajee, says the BRT system will improve the lives of people living in and around the city. She says it has been introduced in response to repeated pleas to improve the public transport system. Moosajee has also denied the forum's allegations that the City of Jo'burg is impounding taxis to facilitate the expansion of government's BRT.
Moosajee says the city in the guise of the transport department has no jurisdiction over impounding vehicles. She says this is purely the responsibility of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety who on an ongoing basis continue to check roadworthiness and other issues in relation to taxi vehicles; and says they certainly have no interest as the city in embarking on any action that has negative consequences for the people of Johannesburg.
The United Taxi Association Forum has accused the City of Joburg of impounding taxis in an effort to create space for the implementation of the BRT feeder system. This is one of the reasons taxi operators have given for today's mass stayaway. They are against government's roll-out of more Rea Vaya buses from Monday next week.
