Pretoria has joined Johannesburg in issuing flood warnings, as steady rain continues in Gauteng. The Tshwane Community Safety department says it's on high alert for cases of flooding.
Spokesperson, Console Tleane, says three divisions have been created to assist should the need arise. Residents can call the 24 hour line 012 310 6400 should they need help. Earlier, Johannesburg issued a warning to communities living near the Jukskei river, such as Dainfern, Woodmead and Alexandra. Areas around the Klipriver system in Soweto are also at risk.
Tleane says: "Residents who have walls in their yards are advised to open up holes so the water can get through we have three parts with this division, which will respond the metro police will monitor road and assist necessary fire brigade will be on standby and disaster management areas will respond to distressed cases."
Meanwhile, the South African Weather Service says people in most parts of the country can expect cold and wet weather for the better part of the day and the weekend. Temperatures will only start rising on Sunday.
Forecaster, Puseletso Mofokeng, says the rainy and cloudy weather will persist over the eastern parts of the country. "We are still again going into very cold conditions we expecting rain this evening chance of rainfall to drop to 60% in Gauteng to persist till the early morning hours of tomorrow and the North West on Sunday we excepting most of the development will be gone only 30% chance in Gauteng temperatures will rise into mid 20s during day time."
