A special anti-corruption unit is to be set up in the office of the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Richard Baloyi. The unit will target corruption in the public service, in collaboration with trade unions and other government structures. This was one of a number of resolutions taken during the last day of a Public Service Summit held in Durban.

The Summit also resolved that tender processes will have to be open to public scrutiny. Baloyi says the department wants to deal decisively with this issue. “The issue about fighting corruption in the public service is a very serious matter. We took a decision at the Summit. The Summit agreed with a view raised by the Minister of Public Service and Administration that a unit is going to be set up in his office that is going to deal with issues related to corruption at the public service at a faster level,” says Baloyi.

Meanwhile, Cosatu in Limpopo has called for the blacklisting of any company that has won a tender, but then failed to complete its projects or done shoddy work. It also wants so-called tenderpreneurs who fail to pay tax, to be blacklisted. Cosatu's provincial secretary, Dan Sebabi, was addressing the Young Communist League Provincial Council in Mokopane. Sebabi says Cosatu will do what ever it takes to fight corruption, irrespective of who is involved.
