N2 highway reopens near Cape Town following protest April 11 2009 , 11:38:00

The N2 highway at the Mew Way off ramp near Cape Town has returned to normal, after police dispersed a group of about 500 protesting members. Police spokesperson Billy Jones says it seems the residents were protesting about pending evictions in Khayelitsha. He says in addition to the brief chaos caused by the protestors, traffic was further disrupted after a truck accident.

The N2 has since been reopened to traffic and the debris has been cleared. “We have deployed our forces, the group has of now moved within the residential area and SAPS and metro members are monitoring the group.” Earlier protestors threw stones at cars and burnt tyres. It was not clear who was responsible for the chaos on both lanes of the highway.
