About 150 lecturers have been locked inside the school building by angry students at the Tshwane South College in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria.
One of the lecturers, Dingaan Makwela, says students have also locked the gates in an effort to prevent police from entering the premises. Makwela says the students are demanding text books and other learning materials.
Student leaders are negotiating with police as students burn tyres inside the college yard. Makwela says the angry students are using fire extinguishers to stop lecturers from going out of the building:
“It's about 1000 students. They are spraying fire-extinguishers, burning things outside and they are not allowing us to go home. They have also locked the police out. They are demanding stationary, textbooks and other teaching and learning equipment. They do not want to speak to us, but the police are trying to speak to them. They say they will only speak to us if we give them textbooks.”
