SA mobile operators to resubmit fees request next month February 09 2010 , 7:25:00

Mobile phone companies, Vodacom, MTN and Cell C say they will resubmit their request to cut inter-connection fees to Icasa next month. Last week, communications regulator Icasa rejected a proposal by the operators to reduce the inter-connection fees.

The operators offered to reduce their fees from the current R1.25 to 89c a minute in March, 85c a minute in October next year and 80c a minute in October 2012.  However, Icasa and Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda have both said 89c is still too high. Icasa is working on a draft of new regulations on inter-connect regulations. It plans to release them in the next few months.

Cellphone users will have to wait for another three months before they can expect mobile inter-connection rates to go down from R1.25 to 89c.

Earlier, the Democratic Alliance accused Vodacom, MTN and Cell C of greed and not having the spirit to care for their customers.
