July 22, 2008, 08:45
The remains of ANC liberation fighter and former leader of South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU) Matikwane Serotho have been exhumed at Sea Point cemetery in Maseru, Lesotho, after nearly eight hours of digging.
Serotho was popularly known as Gene Gugushe. He was among the liberation fighters killed during South African Defence Force raids in Lesotho in 1982.
The ANC regards the exhumation of liberation fighters as its way of giving back to the community. Families have described Serotho as a humble and a good man.
Serotho's remains will be buried in Sebokeng on Saturday. According to the ANC the remains of 20 liberation fighters, who died in Lesotho, have already been exhumed and reburied in their respective hometowns in South Africa. The graves of 18 other freedom fighters are yet to be identified.
