Political analysts agree that discussions around economic policy and labour market reforms will top the agenda during today's Alliance Summit between the ANC, the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu), SA Communist Party (SACP) and South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco).
The three-day meeting starts this afternoon at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, north of Johannesburg. ANC president, Jacob Zuma, recently came under fire from Cosatu over his comments in support of a more flexible labour policy. The labour federation has always been vocal in its opposition to labour market reform, promising 'blood on the floor' if policy and legislation are changed.
Executive Director of Research at Unisa, Professor Tinyiko Maluleke, has predicted lively debate on the issue. “The honeymoon following Polokwane is over, especially when it comes to issues of economic and labour policies,” says Maluleke.
No major policy shift
Meanwhile Cosatu's spokesperson, Patrick Craven, says they will discuss government's economic policy in detail. He has confirmed that the labour federation will submit policy proposals relating to demands for much greater and faster redistribution of the country's wealth. However, Craven says there will not be any major shift in policies.
