ANC backs Mbeki’s mediation efforts in Zimbabwe

President Thabo Mbeki and President Robert Mugabe

Mbeki was selected by SADC to mediate in Zimbabwe

May 06, 2008, 11:30

The ANC has again given its full support to President Thabo Mbeki's mediation efforts in Zimbabwe. This comes as Zimbabwe's opposition MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, indicated that he wanted Mbeki removed from the process.

The ANC has described the release of the presidential election results as a positive development and says in the event of a run-off, it should be conducted in a conducive environment.

It has also called on Zimbabwean parties to consider formulating a government of national unity. ANC Secretary General, Gwede Mantashe, says Mbeki's mediation needs to continue so that the process can be seen to a conclusion that represents the will of the Zimbabwean people.
