ANC members were cautioned against disrespecting decisions made by the party

December 05, 2007, 07:15
Non-governmental organisations and members of the Western Cape ANC Women's League will march in Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats today to protest a decision by the ANC Women's League to nominate Jacob Zuma for the ANC presidency.
Spokesperson of the organisers, Mandisa Sinuka, says after the march they will take part in a prayer. She says it will be in support of President Thabo Mbeki. Both President Mbeki and his deputy, Zuma, have signed a nomination form from the ANC Electoral Commission. The duo will battle for the ANC's top job at the party's conference in two weeks' time. Zuma signed his form while on a visit to London.
Chairperson of the ANC Electoral Commission, Bertha Gxowa, says more than 100 party members have so far accepted nominations for the national conference in Polokwane. The ANC will elect officials to its top six posts as well as the 60-member National Executive Committee. Gxowa says they are still contacting people who have been nominated. The ANC Electoral Commission is expected to release a consolidated list of candidates who have accepted or declined leadership nominations soon.
The 12-member commission is currently approaching all nominated candidates to confirm whether they are willing to stand for the party's top six positions. The commission has received more than 4000 nominations from ANC members in the nine provinces, as well as those in the ANC Youth and Women's Leagues.
