Sadtu will probe allegations that Madisha stole the SACP's donation money

December 02, 2007, 18:45
Sadtu's Willie Madisha will stay on as the president of the teachers' union for now. “Willie Madisha is the president of Sadtu, in terms of our own constitution there must be due process, so we are following due process if there are any allegations,” said Sadtu general secretary Thulas Nxesi.
The union says an independent inquiry will be set up to investigate its president's conduct and continued allegations in the half a million rand donation saga.
Madisha stepped down as Cosatu president, while the labour federation was awaiting the outcome of a similar probe.
Madisha claims he handed half a million rand in donor money to SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande. However Nzimande has denied this.
Sadtu to receive probe report next year
Last month, the issue split a Sadtu national general council meeting down the middle with the Eastern Cape tabling a motion of no confidence in Madisha.
It was referred to the unions' national executive committee, where it was discussed for close to 10 hours yesterday. “These continuing allegations and conflicts surrounding the president, this was impacting negatively on the union and we've also resolved that the president is entitled to fair and due processes and on that basis then an independent inquiry has been established,” said Nxesi.
A report will be handed to Sadtu leaders in February next year. Madisha was not available for comment.
Sadtu has also called on its members to implement the Cosatu political resolutions taken with regard to the ANC conference to be held in two weeks time, in particular, the union says support for Jacob Zuma as president.
