Work ahead for home affairs 2010 preparations

August 01, 2006, 18:45

The 2010 FIFA World Cup continues to dominate the attention of Parliament. Yesterday, the home affairs committee was briefed by the department of home affairs with regard to how the the department will deal with visitors over that period.

Home affairs says they are expecting close to one million visitors for the 2010 soccer extravaganza. The department says that with the various soccer events in the run up to the 2010 World Cup, they have their work cut out for them and will have to hire extra staff at all embassies to deal with the influx of visitors applying for visas. A special project office has already been established. However, some MP's complained that the briefings lacks clarity and there is uncertainty whether the department has the money to implement all the changes. In response, the department says this is an initial plan and is up for review.

A meeting with treasury is in the pipeline to deal with the financial issues.
