Mbeki was sworn in for a second term

April 27, 2004, 10:30

South African President Thabo Mbeki was sworn in today for a second five-year term in office at a glittering ceremony doubling as the country's 10th anniversary of the end of apartheid white rule at the Union Buildings, in Pretoria.

Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president, joined some 100 foreign dignitaries at the ceremony on the grounds of Union Building, the seat of power in Pretoria.

Mbeki and his ANC, in power since 1994, won a landslide victory in South Africa's third democratic election on April 14. - Reuters
