SA to benefit from Qatari oil import deal

A deal to import liquefied natural gas from Qatar is expected to help South Africa meet its growing electricity demands. The governments of South Africa and Qatar are expected to sign a multi-billion rand deal during President Thabo Mbeki's visit to the oil-rich Gulf state.

Mbeki has held talks with the Emir of Qatar, Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, to discuss trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.

Trade and Industry Minister Mandisi Mphahlwa, who is also part of the delegation says they will also pursue other areas of trade and investment beyond the petroleum sector.

The two countries have recorded a total trade of R1 billion last year; with South Africa exporting vehicles, aircraft and heavy machinery to Qatar. Mphahlwa says South Africa will seize every opportunity provided by the booming Qatari economy.
