'Development worker programme bearing fruit'

Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi

Fraser-Moleketi has expressed confidence in the Community Development Worker programme

March 15, 2008, 15:30

Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi has expressed confidence that the Community Development Worker (CDW) programme is bearing fruit.

She was speaking at the Inaugural Community Development Worker Indaba which has been taking place in Midrand, Gauteng.

The CDW programme was launched in 2003 and seeks to ensure that South Africa's communities know how to access government services.

Fraser-Moleketi says: "If you go into a community where the CDWs are effective, a community member will say: 'Well I didn't know you were coming and if it is true that the President is coming as you say, my CDW would have known that.'

"So I think that we are already seeing the beginnings of low hanging fruit out of this programme because we started from absolutely nothing to put a programme in place and I think we have a very sound foundation at this point."
