Mauritius is set for a process of reconciliation to deal with a legacy of discrimination
|
March 12, 2008, 06:00
President Thabo Mbeki says South Africa stands ready to assist Mauritius in creating a Truth and Justice Commission similar to the TRC model created after the demise of apartheid.
Mauritius is planning to start a process of reconciliation and healing to deal with the legacy of discrimination and social inequalities following centuries of French and British colonial rule. Mbeki says his government will support such a process.
President Mbeki has also praised Mauritius as a stable African nation that continues to uphold and respect democratic order and the rule of law. Mbeki was speaking in the Island's capital Port Louis at an official banquet in his honour last night. He says Mauritius has demonstrated over the past 40 years that it is possible to achieve freedom as well as to fight against poverty and social inequalities.
