IFP calls for Justice Minister’s resignation

Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla

The IFP wants Mabandla to resign

February 11, 2008, 16:15

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has called for the resignation of Justice Minister Brigitte Mabandla. This comes after the Pretoria High Court ruled in favour of the IFP in an application to have 384 IFP prisoners considered for a presidential pardon.

IFP MP, Koos van der Merwe, says the party has struggled for four-and-a-half years to have the minister consider the applications.

The Human Rights Commission ruled in January last year that Mabandla had violated prisoners' human rights by failing to consider the applications.

Van der Merwe says Mabandla has three months to attend to the applications in terms of the court ruling.
