Zille says Mbeki's government has failed to account for the electricity crisis
|
January 28, 2008, 14:00
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, Helen Zille, has arrived for a meeting with President Thabo Mbeki at the Union Buildings in Pretoria this afternoon.
The electricity supply crisis, the indictment of African National Congress President, Jacob Zuma, and the prosecution of National Police Commissioner, Jackie Selebi, were some of the agenda points for the talks.
The meeting was closed, but a number of journalists were gathered at the Union Buildings hoping to hear the outcome of the discussions.
Zille earlier this month requested to meet with Mbeki to discuss what she called "the growing perception of a constitutional and moral crisis" in South Africa.
"The implication of the National Police Commissioner and the ruling party's presidential candidate in massive corruption cases is but one reason for this perception."
"It is fuelled further by mounting evidence that state institutions such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), the Scorpions and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) are being interfered with by powerful political and non-political interests," Zille said at the time.
Meanwhile the Independent Democrats (ID) will call for a vote of no confidence in President Thabo Mbeki and his cabinet during the first sitting of parliament.
ID leader Patricia de Lille says they will introduce the motion just after Mbeki's State of the nation Address next week. De Lille says Mbeki and his Cabinet have failed South Africa and the electricity crisis was the last straw. - Sapa
