Highways in the vicinity of sport stadiums will undergo multi-million rand facelifts before the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Nazir Alli of the CEO of the National Roads Agency says highways in a 50km radius of each stadium will be upgraded with funds from the treasury, toll fees and public private partnerships. Alli says projects in Pretoria and Johannesburg are already under way.
A high-tech camera system on major highways will be the backbone of security and emergency response during the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The Intelligent Transport System will provide information by allowing emergency services to look at accidents and breakdowns in real time and react to them as quickly as possible. Alli says this is part of the upgrade of highways within a 50km radius of host stadiums.
