President Thabo Mbeki has slammed councillors who abdicate their responsibilities and put local government into disrepute. He was speaking at the South African Local Government Association's (Salga) national conference at Gallagher Estate in Midrand in Gauteng.
Mbeki also says councillor's need to fulfill their mandate and report back to their constituencies.
Mbeki added that Salga members should assist with the daily operations of municipalities and their interventions should be helpful. He told the gathering that local municipalities have a responsibility to reverse the legacy of Apartheid.
Mbeki is expected in Durban later today to where he will discuss the party's KwaZulu-Natal leadership. This follows newspaper reports that some of the ANC leaders in KZN are plotting to make the province a no-go area for the president.
