Charles Nqakula, the safety and security minister, leaves for Tanzania today for talks aimed at facilitating the peace process in Burundi, said the department of foreign affairs.
He would attend a regional meeting with, among others, Jakaya Kikwete, Tanzania's president, Pierre Nkurunziza, the Burundian president, the United Nations Operations in Burundi (ONUB), the African Union and the Palipehutu-FNL, said Ronnie Mamoepa, the foreign affairs spokesman
On the agenda would be implementation of cease-fire and other agreements, peace negotiations involving all role-players, and mechanisms to end the conflict, he said.
Nqakula last visited Tanzania for consultations on May 10, when he also visited Uganda and Burundi. A regional technical team has been established to support him.
Mamoepa said the South African government remained optimistic about the prospects for lasting peace in Burundi and commended all parties for their commitment to bringing about a lasting peace in their country. - Sapa
