"From Kubus
to Kibbutz"
|
| During the 1980's, thousands of South
Africans bought into Adriaan Niewoudt's kubus-scheme. Backyards and garages across the country were turned into
production plants for a formula destined to be used in beauty
products. The formula
turned out to be little more than milk powder, the scheme little
more than a pyramid and it all came crashing down. |

Twenty years on and after a stint in prison, the Kubus King
says he wants to plow something back into society. He claims he'll start the biggest job creation programme in
the world later this year - a plan that involves setting up
kibbutz-like ceramic factories across the country. Focus producer
Keith Sayster traveled to Niewoudt's farm, Rondawel, near Garies in
the Northern Cape to find out more.

Children on the Cape flats:
|
|
A lot of suburbs in the Cape Peninsula are caught in the
grip of gangsterism. Hundreds of people have already died. An
alarming phenomena is now taking place with more young kids
joining gangs and committing serious violent acts. Producer John
Bailey and cameraman Shamiel Albertyn went to investigate.

We speak with 12-year-old “Anthony” (not his real
name) about what it’s like living in Lavender Hill. He tells us
that some of his friends, as young as 10-years-old, have already
killed people.
In Hanover Park we meet “Craig.” He says children as
young as six-years-old are roaming the streets, shooting
people.
Llewellyn Jordaan of the New World Foundation - an NGO
based in Lavender - says the lack of positive role models is
conducive for kids to become trapped in gangsterism. He says
although many of the gangster-ridden communities have produced
highly successful professionals, many of them never return, once
they’ve left the old neighbourhoods.
