Government says it uses the services of professional, registered valuators.  The SA Institute of Valuators and farmers say government uses the services of valuators who submit the cheapest tenders.  According to the Institute, government appoints candidate valuators who have very little knowledge of farm valuations.  Valuators receive different terms of reference for the same valuation and valuations of one property are often done years apart – resulting in very different market values being applied to valuations.   

Land owners complain that they can’t start fresh elsewhere as farmers with the amount they receive from government as compensation.
