"At the push of a button"

To react faster and to arrive at correct place – these are some of the biggest challenges for the South African Centre for Abused and Exploited Children when looking for a missing child.

Technology can contribute to an accurate search – especially cell phone and satellite technology which can track a cell phone to within a few meters of its geographical position.

This technology is readily available in South Africa – and is now used in conjunction with E-Blockwatch.  E-Blockwatch keeps a whole network of ordinary South Africans and policemen in contact with one another through cell phones.  Should a concerned father report his daughter as missing, not only can her position be determined (if she uses a cell phone), but a network of people can also be deployed to look for her and help her.

More controversial tracking technology is already used overseas. Micro chips which are implanted under a person’s skin, can reveal that person’s location.

But locally and overseas, strict legislation has to be adhered to: no matter what type of technology is used, a person may only be traced with his consent or a warrant from the police.

Producer Karin d’Orville and cameraman Andre Gous spoke to relieved parents and the people at the forefront of this technology.
