A bumpy ride for government's pricey plans for safer public transport in the Eastern Cape - and - the Minister of transport talks about government's goals for "moving the nation" by 2010 and beyond...

R9,2 billion has been allocated for the upgrading of public transport infrastructure in South Africa. Busses, railways, airports and roads face a major overhaul in the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Government also wants to replace three quarters of the existing taxi fleet by 2010 – a project which has already seen the scrapping of more than 10 thousand taxis.

Producer Keith Sayster reports that residents of the Eastern Cape experience little of the benefits of the taxi recapitalisation project – since unroadworthy taxis and their drivers continue to claim many lives.

Transport minister Jeff Radebe joins us in the studio to discuss government’s public transport goals for 2010 and beyond – and progress made with developing an integrated road, railway and airport infrastructure.
