This Tuesday
Special Assignment focuses on a deepening crisis in Cape Town.
Many young adults and schoolchildren as young as 10 years are in
the grip of a powerful drug called crystal methamphetamine –
known locally as tik. It’s been on the fringes for several years
but it is now catching on fast among the youth of the Western
Cape. |

In this half-hour
documentary we trace the lives of a young addict called Ashley,
his friend “Jane” and four young women in the sex
industry. All of them are from Mitchell’s Plain. Their lives are
in a downward spiral as their need for crystal methamphetamines
gets stronger.
Ashley started
using drugs when he was 12. He started with marijuana but
quickly moved on to stronger drugs like mandrax and crack.
Finally he got hooked on crystal methamphetamines. His desperate
mother says he changed from a happy young boy to an aggressive
stranger.
A young lady
we call
“Jane” is in grade 10 and started using
“tik” last year. She lost her mother when she was three years
old. Her grandmother raised her, but three years ago, her granny
died in a hail of bullets when gangster fired shots into their
home. |

Stripper
“Chanice” and her sister “Sandy” are both working in a strip
club in Cape Town. They say they use “tik” to get them through
the long ten hour shift. It also helps them to cope with
customers and keeps them slim.
Drug experts
and community leaders say the situation is out of control. “Tik”
is highly addictive and the addicts being treated are getting
younger. In this investigation we highlight the efforts of
parents, and a task team that is tackling the crisis head-on.
This
disturbing documentary is directed by Johann Abrahams and was
filmed by Shamiel Albertyn. |
