Special Assignment
investigates the problem of teenager pregnancy and of
mothers who are still at school.
Research reveals that
South African youth are sexually active from a young
age. Most start as young as 14 or 15 but some start as
young as 12 or 13. The Department of Education is
concerned. They say that more than a third of all
teenagers in South Africa will have been pregnant by the
time they are 18. Teachers, learners and government
officials are divided on how to deal with this dilemma.

Many of the teenagers we
spoke to say peer pressure is the major factor in their
pregnancy. They say they know about contraceptives and
condoms but don’t use them because nurses are rude to
them at clinics. They also fear the myths that claim
contraceptives makes a person gain weight.
Frequently teenage
mothers are left to cope without the fathers of their
babies. Most of these teenagers drop out of school when
they fall pregnant. They are left with few opportunities
and limited prospects of finding a job and empowering
themselves.
This insightful
documentary is directed by Mpho Moagi.
