This Tuesday Special Assignment looks at how global warming will affect South Africa.
The most recent predictions show that Africa will be the continent most severely affected by climate change and that South Africa will have a unique set of problems to contend with. Some parts of the country will become colder and wetter while others will become hotter and drier.

The Western Cape in particular will be hard hit and the problems have already begun. Recent research done at weather stations across the province has produced startling results – in the last thirty years some areas have already warmed up by more than one degree. This process is set to accelerate and scientists say the effects will be devastating for a part of the country that produces almost 50% of South Africa’s export crops.

The programme also looks at one of the biggest causes of global warming – emissions from cars. We look at what effect the car you drive has on the world you live in and give crucial advice on what to look for in vehicle if you want to decrease your personal carbon footprint.

Heat is written and produced by Anneliese Burgess, filmed by Brian Uranovsky and edited by Trevor Mcpherson.
