This Tuesday Special Assignment uncovers corruption at the Pretoria Correctional Centre for awaiting trial detainees.
After a six week investigation, with assistance from a former awaiting trial detainee, the team managed to capture several officials on hidden camera, accepting bribes in exchange for carrying drugs and alcohol into prison. All transactions took place in broad daylight, close to the Centre.

The former detainee, Michael Rautenbach, decided to blow the whistle on the corruption at the facility after his “three months of hell” at the Pretoria Correctional Centre. He says large scale corruption, including sex for sale with minors, persuaded him to co - operate with Special Assignment to expose the rot.
This latest scandal comes five years after the Grootvlei Prison expose, where a video was made by inmates to expose corruption at that facility.

Despite the costly Jali Commission of Inquiry , which pointed out the shortcomings in the system, the key problem of corruption is still eating at the heart of the department. Also captured on tape is a discussion between Michael Rautenbach and a warder, planning the escape of one of the awaiting-trial detainees.

This expose was produced by Johann Abrahams and largely filmed by Roy Freeman.
